3rd strike rule
Question
This happened last night Babe Ruth. Bases loaded no outs. Catcher dropped the ball batter called out because of 3rd strike rule less then two outs. The catcher than throws to first runner at third took home on the play the result all base runners scored. Umpire called dead ball all runners go back to their base. Is this the right call?
Answer
No. The batter was out by rule (less than 2 outs, first base occupied). Therefore, the catcher was making what amounts to a throw behind the runner at first. This is a live ball play and anything happening during such a live ball play is going to count. The one thing that could have happened would be if the umpire granted time before the catcher threw the ball. Outside of that, the play should have stood. I hope this answers your question.
