Ruling on Base Running
Question
This happened in my sons game the other night. A runner trying to advance home got caught in a pickle. While running towards homeplate, the 3rd baseman threw the ball and it hit the runner hard in is back. The boy was hurt and the 3rd baseman just had to pick the ball up and tag him out while he was laying on the ground - what should the call have been?
Answer
He's out. A thrown ball striking a player in the field of play does not stop the play. The same would have been true if the ball had bounced off the kid and ricocheted into the outfield allowing him to score. The exception is if the runner intentionally touches the thrown ball. If he intentionally touched the thrown ball, he is out for interference and all runners must return to their last touched base. Otherwise, the play will continue as if nothing happened. I hope this answers your question.
