umpire error
Question
official scorebook count is two strikes on the batter. upon the next pitch the umpire again calls strike two. before the scorekeeper can notify the umpire of his error another pitch is thrown and the batter reaches first on a hit. by this time the defensive coach also brings it to the attention of the umpire that the batter should have been called out on the previous pitch. is the batter runner out or should he remain at first base?
Answer
Gary,
The umpire is responsible for keeping the count. If an umpire missed the third strike, and nobody catches it until after the next pitch, then it is too late to correct the mistake. You cannot punish the batter for the error of the umpire, or the late appeal of the coach.
