arm shot?
Question
I am returning to slowpitch softball at 48 yrs old and an absence of many years. Despite my age, I have always had a strong arm. (Even throwing in off season)I'm Skinny, weak bat, but a "gun" from third base. Lately my arm is in severe pain. It usually got better after a little long toss and settled in with strength and accuracy. Now, pain worsens and feels like I'm throwing a bowling ball to first; and no control at that! How do I rehab. Rest? Work through pain and throw? Pain is hard to pinpoint. Mostly feels weak and painful all over. How do I strengthen and get ready for season?
Answer
Dave,
My first response is to go see your doctor. Make sure that you don't have any injuries to the ligaments and tendons in your shoulder and elbow.
It is very important that you stretch before and after you throw and ice your arm after throwing. The weak arm feeling can come from you over compensating and changing your throwing motion causing bad mechanics. The bad mechanics will cause inaccuracy, weakness, and possible more pain because of the stress you are putting on your joints.
To rehab the arm make sure you are free from injuries and do all the lead up throwing drills. The throwing drills are the two knee, one knee, square, and L drills. Make sure you start slow and don't throw full speed for the first few weeks. Let your are build strength before letting it go all out.
To get the proper mechanics you should go to a knowledgeable pitching instructor. When you get the proper mechanics and you build the strength back the accuracy will improve, and as long as you have no permanent damage to the arm the pain should not be there.
If you need a recommendation on a good pitching instructor (depending on your location) I could help set you up with someone. Let me know.
