Drafting in Little League
Question
My son is 9 years old and is entering Little League for the first time. If he goes to a try out and does well, the board wants the option to have coaches draft him for the major league. We don't want him to play in the major league b/c we think he's too young and won't get the opportunity to play much and learn to pitch. We, as his parents, would like him to play at least one year in the minor league. Do we have the right to refuse for him to play in the major league and then he would automatically get drafted to play in the minor league? Are try outs mandatory? Our board keeps changing their mind and can't seem to come to a conclusion on this. Can they make all 12 year olds play in the major league and give the 9 year olds the option?
Answer
Michelle,
Little League rules require that all 12 year olds play in the Major Baseball division. This rule took effect this year.
As for your nine year old playing in the minors. Little League requires that all players tryout. So your son would have to tryout, regardless if you wanted him into the minor division or not.
Our league has a strict policy that those players who do not tryout lose eligibility for a year. This includes 9 year olds. Sometimes, we have parents who want their child to play minors. The theory is that most players, regardless of age, will do just fine in Majors, with of course proper coaching. I can't speak for your league, but with mine, it is an honor to be drafted and play in the Major level. While I understand that you are afraid that he is behind, talent wise, the other players, he will soon learn and develop skills, and will do well.
Most parents who have concern over their child playing in majors feel better once their realize there is no major difference, and that their child is going to enjoy themselves and learn at the same time.
I hope this has answered your questions. Should you have anymore, please let me know.
