catcher Qs - throw to 2nd
Question
as a sophmore catcher in high school i was wondering what is the key to get a solid throw down to second, i have one of the strongest arms in the league but i just cant seem to that velocity down to second can you tell me how?
Answer
Hi Aaron,
it sounds like you don't have the right stance for the throw. Having a strong arm but not making the distance in time seems like you're missing something in the whole process. Agility is the key and getting yourself into alignment quickly is a must. You'll have to review how you are starting your throws and knowing someone with a camera will help. During a practice, have them record several of your throws from different angles.
This throw is very difficult for most catchers and your agility and strength must be up for the challenge. I think there are four techniques used by most catchers. Keeping in mind that a good throw from your pitcher will help you in your throw to 2nd, you should focus on one of these four techniques and make it your own.
Trying to throw from your knees (without leg or hip action to help) is very difficult. In essence, you are throwing with only your arms and it requres great strength and accuracy.
Another stance is called the jump turn, where you have to jump up in alignment to the base you are throwing to. You'll have to practice this jump up into position extensively in order for this to work effectively.
The step pivot (or step back pivot) requires you to take a slight pivot with the rear leg in order to align for the throw. This throw is slower than that of the jump turn.
A stride-throw requires that you push forward and upwards over the plate in aligning your throw to 2nd base. It runs the risk of you getting hit by the batter (if he swings) and presupposes that you have a good catch of the pitched ball (that is not a wild pitch).
Here is a website that describes the four techniques:
