Penalty for illegal pitch
Question
What is the penalty for a pitcher who puts his fingers to his mouth and does not wipe them on his shirt before throwing the ball? We had this happen in a tournament game, and the pitcher was removed from the game with no warning. We supposedly follow Little League rules, but are not a little league affiliate. The umpire said the pitcher should be ejected from the game.
Answer
The penalty is an illegal pitch. However, the umpire is within his rights to eject the pitcher for this act. In little league it seems a bit ridiculous to eject a pitcher without prior warning or penalization. I would never eject a pitcher on the first offense. I would eject him though if he continues defacing the ball even after the warnings.
