Batter Interference or not
Question
In a BPA tournament this weekend there was one of those odd circumstances that had everyone including the umpires talking. Runner on 2nd trying to steal 3rd, the catcher makes the throw down to third and the batter steps into the path of the ball, while still in the batters box. The ball is deflected off of the batters helmet and goes over the fence into the stands.
The umpire did not call any interference on the batter or dead ball but instead gave the runner home as an overthrow out of play.
Was this correct call?
Answer
That is a pretty tricky situation. The determining factor in this call is the batter's intentions. The batter has every right to be in the batter's box unless the ball rolls into it as well. The fact that the batter moved into the path of the throw would only make it interference if he did it intentionally.
It sounds like the umpire made the right call assuming the batter did not try to block the throw.
