Getting a short swing
Question
my question is about how to make my swing short and compacted...my whole like my swing has been long and i have been able to adjust even though it is long. In high school i hit .400 every year and in my first year at junior college i hit .385... the only thing is that my swing is long and i dont like it it doesnt help much on the inside pitches... when it comes to Batting practice my swing is short and compact but for some reason in a game it changes and i dont know why i think short at the plate yet my body doesnt agree with my mind... i would tke like a 100 swings at night trying to build muscle memory but that doesnt to seem to help much.... no coach has been able to help me and i really need some help
Answer
Josh,
First, you should video your game swings vs. batting practice swings. If you are able to do this make sure you video from the same angle so you can get a good comparison.
Check your mechanics, are you a rotational or linear hitter. From my experience linear hitters seem to have long swings from the excess use of the hands and arms. Rotational hitters usually have short swings because the hips create the swing while the upper body maintains the angles.
Have your coach check your bottom arm. Do you load too far back? or extend it too early? Straightening this arm before or during rotation will create a long swing.
You may be too anxious at the plate and create some linear movement with your lower half. If this happens the movement will make the arms drag and be long while the rotation becomes slower.
Let me know if I can help with anything else. If this doesn't correct anything than give me a detailed explanation of your stance and approach to the ball so I can get a better picture of what you are trying to do at the plate. With more info I can answer your question better.
Thank You,
John Priest
