Stepping out when the pitcher pitches the ball
Question
I have a 9 year old that is a pretty impressiver ball player. This is his first year in minors baseball(kid pitch). He has developed a habit of taking a step out before he swings so that he is sure he doesn't get hit with the ball. He only does this when kids pitch to him.
He doesn't do this when I am pitching. How have any of you corrected this?
Answer
Fear of the ball is common at that age. He's probably not stepping out when you pitch to him, since he has more confidence that he won't get hit than he might by another player. I don't know of any shortcut to remedy this, other than making sure that when you take batting practice as a team, use your own pitchers (rather than coaches) to deliver the ball. This also gives your pitchers work on accuracy, and at the same time gets the batters more comfortable with live pitching.
