Going Back
Question
QUESTION: Saw this when Cabrera made his unassisted triple play.
The runner from first was past second when the ball was caught. Of course the rule is he has to touch it on the way back to first in that situation.
So, was he forced out at second (simultaneously with the force out of the runner at second when the pitch was thrown) when the fielder touched the base with his foot? Or did that runner way off first have to be tagged? And if so, could he have been tagged while touching second, as when there are two runners on the same bag?
I was under the impression there is a force, and that a runner who merely cut across the diamond rather than retracing his steps would be forced at any base he missed, appeal play or not.
Thanks.
ANSWER: Unfortunately, I didn't see the play so I'm not able to comment on exactly how the outs were recorded (nor do i know the situation....how many runners on base, where the ball was hit, etc). But sounds like it was a great play!

Answer
First out of course was the catch, 2nd out the force at 2nd base because the runner from 2nd to 3rd failed to tag up, and 3rd out was tagging the runner before he had a chance to backtrack all the way to 1st. The last runner who was tagged was pretty much out of luck, since he could have been tagged at any point between where he was, and 1st base. It was an especially unusual play because there was either a hit & run called, or the runners were stealing on the play.
