8U batting - pulling everything
Question
QUESTION: My son is 8 and is a very good hitter for his age group, with lots of power. But recently he has started hitting everything dead left (he's a righty), even outside pitches. I've worked with him to try to have him hit the ball deeper in the plate and to the right side, but no luck. The idea of hitting "inside out" doesn't seem to click with him.
Do you have any good ideas for drills or swing thoughts I can give him?
ANSWER: Luke,
My favorite drill is off the batting tee. The tee is very basic but it can cure any hitting problem. Set the tee up on the outside corner, deep middle, and deep inside. This will get your son to see the inside half of the baseball better. The deep middle and deep inside will make your son "inside out" the ball. Put a black dot on each ball and set it up on the tee so he can concentrate on hitting the inner half.
Another drill is using a one hand trainer bat. Your son is 8 so it may not work as much as it will when he gets older. The smallest one hand trainer bat I have seen is 18 inches made by D-Bat. It may not work because their isn't too much of a length difference from his game bat. If you do try this use the bat with two hands. Because the bat is so short you have to let the baseball get deep. If you try to hit it too far out front and try to pull it you will miss or hit it off the end.
You can also have his whole team practice hitting opposite field if you can. During practice you can have a game in which you have to hit the ball to the opposite side, if not your out.
Make sure he is hitting with rotational mechanics and not linear. If this pull hitting has just happened recently than he may be using too much arms (linear) and coming around the ball. Make sure he is using his backside to rotate his arms to the ball. By doing this it usually makes the hitter let the ball come deeper and hit the inside half.
This is one of the hardest skills to teach younger players. Younger players seem to think that if you pull the ball it will go farther. This is true at 8 years old, but at 16 years old you become an easy out if you strictly pull.
Let me know if I can help further.

QUESTION: John,
Thanks for the tips. So far using the dots on the ball off a tee seems to help. He is able to hit off the tee to the opposite field. But he's not able to transfer that to live pitches yet. He's still pulling most pitches foul. Just have to keep working on it, I guess.
Answer
Luke,
Try to get your son to transfer the tee to soft toss, soft toss to batting practice, batting practice to live, and live to game situation. It's going to take some time but your son is going to be a better hitter for it.
Good Luck,
