Machine Pitch (7 & 8 year olds)
Question
In a recent game, a player was hit by a pitch from the pitching machine. The scenario, wind blowing about 30 mph, not sure if batter was attempting to swing or avoid the ball, ball hits batter on the fingers of the left hand (right handed batter), ball went foul. Is this an actual foul ball or would it be a HBP and batter given first base? Attempted to inform the umpire regarding this, but was told by umpire ( I was coaching 3rd base) that she didn't get hit even though I clearly saw the ball hit her fingers, also I asked the player several times before the next pitch if she had been hit and she said yes.
Answer
In the pitching machine age group in my little league there are no HBPs. I'm not sure about yours but if there are then it depends on whether or not the batter swung. If the batter swung and was hit then it is a dead ball strike. If she didn't then she would get first base.
It doesn't seem right to me to have a HBP's in a league where a machine pitches to the players.
Interference?
