infield fly

Question
Hi heres our situation.  Bases loaded with one out.  Our batter hit a ball that reached about 9 feet in height (a weak line drive) and landed at the edge of the infield grass/dirt in front of the shortstop.  We sent the runners as we could tell no one had a chance to make a catch on the ball because the shortstop was playing deep.  Once the shortstop arrived to the ball he failed twice to pick the ball up so everyone reached safely.  It was now that the two umpires got together and called our batter out due to an infield fly.  We did not think this ball was an infield fly but thats the umpires call, we understand this. What we are curious of is can they call infield fly once the entire play is over?

Answer
Tom,

An infield fly should be called at the apex(the top of the arc) of the flyball.  However, the umpires can call it up to the next pitch.  If your players advanced, then they stay advanced.  Hopefully the umpires have realized that it is easier to call the infield fly before the play is over.

I hope this has answered your question.  Should you have anymore, please don't hesitate to ask!
