altered bat
Question
We have a kid in our 11-12 division that has a bat with about a 6-8 inch crack in it, we stated that it was unsafe & couldn't be used anymore, our littleleague does not want to upset anyone & didn't want to remove it, we finally had them saying he couldn't use it any more, well now he took it home and his grandpa stapled it, glued it & painted over it. Originally we said it shouldn't be used for safety issues, now my opinion is it is an altered bat. I grew up on the softball fields & once a bat was declared unsafe, you couldn't use it. Plus I did see the plastic end of one of these aluminum bats with a crack fly off I & skim the top of a ladies head, leaving quite a cut. Can you please send me any information as to the rule of using an altered bat & our little leagues responsibility to remove the bat from play. Thank you.
Answer
The rules for damaged and altered bats is pretty simple. Use an altered or illegal bat and you are removed from the game. Before every game the umpires should be inspecting each teams bats to look for dents, cranks, loose tape, etc. If the bats have anything wrong with them they are not to be used during the game. If a bat is not there for inspection it is also not to be used during the game.
Its not just a safety issue, its a rules issue. Your little league is not following a pretty commonly known baseball rule.
