sacrifice fly rules
Question
If there is are runners on 2nd and third with one out and batter hits fly ball tat gets caught for the second out. Guy from third tags up whereas guy from second runs on contact and gets doubled up at 2nd before he can get back but AFTER runner from third crosses the plate. Does the run count? In other words is the out at second like a force play and thus the run wouldn't count even though runner from third crossed the plate before the guy at second was doubled up, or is it more like a regular putout where runner would score so long as he crossed the plate first. Please advise - we had this question during a pick-up game today. thanks
Answer
Seth,
The run counts because the runner on third scored before the last out was made and because this isn't a force out.
A force play is only in effect when a batter hits a ball and becomes a runner, thereby forcing a runner on base to move up. In this case, the runner wasn't forced to move - he chose to move on his own.
You're a lucky guy - living somewhere that allows you to play baseball in late December!
Hope this helps!
