blocking base path
Question
Minor league 8 year olds.
I was coaching 1st base and one of my teams players hit a triple. As my player was attempting to round 2 nd base, my player had to move off course to avoid a collision with the second baseman. There was no play at all at second.
After the play I mentioned to the other teams second baseman that he should not block the base path.
This comment made the other teams coach very mad at me and he took the occasion to get in my face and an argument insued.
I felt that it was my responsibility as a coach in the interest of safety to mention to the 2 nd baseman that he should not block the path.
Question? Is it ok for me to tell the second baseman not to block the base?
Answer
Hey Rourke,
I'm sure that if you had it to do over again, you would not have had done it like that.. It was probably best to talk to the coach of the other team. But that would be in a "Perfect world." I understand where you are coming from. If you were telling my 2nd baseman, I would not have had a problem, but I know of a lot of coaches that take the game way too seriously, and would have reacted the same way. What age are we talking about.. 10 years old? or 16 years old.. Two completely different ways of handling the problem..
Anyway, It doesn't sound like you were out of line, but I wasn't there either.
