Squeeze Bunt Scoring
Question
How is a successful squeeze bunt scored. Batter bunts, no errors on play, runner from third scores and batter is safe at first. Is this a hit, sacrifice or fielders choice?
Answer
Bob,
This depends on the judgement of the official scorer. If the scorer feels that the batter was bunting only to get the runner home, then it should be scored as a sacrifice and safe on either a fielder's choice (if they try and make the out at home) or an error (if they don't make the play on the runner at first).
If the scorer feels that the batter was bunting for a base hit and there was no error on the play, then it is scored as a base hit.
Crazy I know, but that's the scoring rule. In most cases, the batter would be awarded a hit (again as long as no error was committed and the fielders didn't try and make the play at home.
Hope this helps!
