Umpire Interference (Dead Ball)

If a hit ball hits an umpire, say standing just to the side and back of the pitcher between first and second on the infield, in the rule book it states that this is umpire interference as the ball has not passed a fielder, and for this example consider that the pitcher was not able to make a play to field the ball.  The rule book says that this umpire interference is a dead ball and play is suspended.  So my question is what happens next?  Is the runner awarded first?  Is he given a strike and made to return to the plate?  If he is given a strike is he out if it is the third strike?  Is he given a ball?

Here's the rulebook quotation:

6.08 The batter becomes a runner and is entitled to first base without liability to be put out (provided he advances to and touches first base) when?br>
(d) A fair ball touches an umpire or a runner on fair territory before touching a fielder.

So, the batter is awarded first base.
