Left handed pitcher
Question
Dennis,
I have a question about where to start with a lefty. My son is a lefty and shows interest in pitching. His speed is fairly good for a 10 year old. Like most 10 year olds he has problems with control. For example out of 20 pitches 7-8 will be strikes, 4-5 will be balls, and the rest will be over the catchers head. He's pitched in 3 full innings this year, struck out 4 and walked 15 or so. I realize a lot of this comes with practice. Is there anything specifically I can do to work with him? We long toss every day to build up arm strength. Any other suggestions? Thanks in advance for the help.
Answer
Hey Benji,
Long toss is good for a 10 year old..
Do not let your son pitch from a wind up if he is wild. You will see a big improvement in his control when he pitches from the stretch. When he starts pitching from the wind-up again, be sure his movement is limited. Have him throw about 4 times per week, skipping every other day. If you are not available, draw a strike zone on the side of a factory, with chalk, and have your son throw for location. Throw to to outsides of the strike zone. In each session, throw about 50-60 pitches depending on how strong your son is. Throw no more than 40 fast balls and mix in the rest with change ups. I don't recommend many curve balls at his age, but if he does, throw no more than about 5 per session and/or per game. (The arm should be bent after he releases the pitch, otherwise he is throwing it wrong and can hurt his arm..) It would be better NOT to throw it at all until he is at least a teen.
Also, remember much of his strength and speed comes from his legs so don't forget to strengthen those as well.
Good Luck,
Dennis
