baseball team
Question
Hello. My 9 year old son plays on a team that mainly consists of kids that attend his elementary school. The coach played college ball and is an excellent coach. He is knowledgable and patient. The team has 12 players, 5 of the 12 players can not hit or make defensive plays.Three of those 5 players have very bad attitudes. They are the kids that mope around and complain. The coach is nice and everyone gets equal play time regardless of talent level. Thus the reason we rarely win a game. We have talked with the coach about his goals, he says he will never tell kids they can not play or select players to be on the team. So, we are wondering if we should leave the team or stay. Good news is that our son gets to play short stop and pitch (his favorite positions) but I'm not sure what the future of this team is. Many parents are wanting to leave because of these players. While I wouldn't want a team that wins all the time, it is disapointing that we've only won a couple games in 2 years of playing. Our top of the line up are great hitters, they get on base...then these 5 stike out so our offense struggles. Then if a ball is ever hit to them they can not make plays (the coach rotates them all around- they all play infield at times). Anyway...we are wondering if we should switch teams now?
Answer
Hey Carrie,
it depends how serious you and your son are about playing ball. If he wants to play High School ball, then he needs to move on, if he wants to just play and pitch, then here he should stay.. If he is a good pitcher, than he may be able to pitch on a better team..
I don't like the attitude thing, but you don't know what else is out there..
If I were you, I would look elsewhere, but check out the coach first and watch the team that he is considering on playing for. If the pitchers are so much better than your son, then he may never pitch or even play for that matter. It's better to PLAY on a week team, than NOT PLAY on a bad team.. Either way , work on his skills..
Look elsewhere but be careful and do your homework.
Good Luck and keep in touch. Let me know what happens..
