Catchers Error?
Question
If the catcher throws a ball from home attempting to catch a runner trying to
steal second and throws it over the second baseman's head say, to the
shortstop backing up the play, is this an error? The runner, by the way, does
not advance to third.
Thanks.
Ken
Answer
Ken,
During a steal, the runner is always given the benefit of the doubt. A bad throw, or slow throw does not get scored as an error by rule. Same goes if a pitcher throws over and the runner takes off for second. If the ball gets away from the first baseman it isn't an error.
