Force out in baseball

Question
We had a situation where there was a force at 2nd base.  The second baseman had the ball in his hand and then touched second base with his glove(no ball in it) and the umpire called the runner out at second on a force.  Doesn't the fielder have to touch the base a part of his body for it to be called an out?

Answer
Liz,

For any force out at a base, the fielder can touch the base with any part of his body, as long as he has control of the ball.

According to OBR (Official Baseball Rules): The PERSON of a player or an umpire is any part of his body, his clothing or his
equipment.

You'll notice "his equipment" was included. This means a player's equipment, including his glove, is considered part of him.
