Baseball time out
Question
Runnder on 3rd, 1 out. BAtter walks. Can the fielding team's manager call time out to go to the mound to settle his pitcher down? even though the ball is live and the runner could try to round 1st to try to get the runner from 3rd in?
Answer
Will: Rule 2
Section 4
Article 2
A base on balls is an award of first base (often referred to as a walk). If a batter receives 4 such calls, the batter must go immediately to first base before time-out is called.
Some coaches will attempt to do as you explain above and come out of the dugout calling time out.
Umpires need to hold their call until the runner touches first base. Should the runner be running with the intention of rounding the base, the time out call should never get made, as it is a continuation of the play.
If the batter/runner stops on the base, if the coach calls time out, it would be given and he can have his conference.
