baseball rule clarification
Question
High School level - What happens if a player hits the dugout in the following two situations. I know from some prior situations that it is hard to correct things once a player goes to the dugout.
1. The player runs to first thinks he was called out, but the umpire did the quick switch to safe on bobbled ball. If he get to the dugout, can he come back to the base or is he done for not making effort to attain next base?
2. The umpile rules him out; he is heading in dugout and the coach is appealing to the other umpire. If he goes in the dugout, is he considered out of the play?
Answer
Karen,
For situation #1, I will need further information. When you say "the umpire did the quick switch to safe on bobbled ball," what do you mean? Did the umpire originally call out and then change his call immediately?
For situation #2, if the out call is later changed by the umpires, the player will be allowed to return to first base. He entered the dugout because the umpire called him out; when the umpires changed the call, the umpires can't then rule him out because he left the field and entered the dugout.
Please reply back with the answer to situation #1, and I will be glad to answer it for you.
