Side-arm thrower
Question
My daughter, who is 11, is now taking fast-pitch pitching lessons. After a day of lessons and another day of pitching, she complained of pain in her shoulder, which I thought was rare for an underhand pitcher. She usually throws a hundred pitches a day in her at-home workouts. As a result she has now started to throw side-arm to compensate for the pain. My question is two-fold. What steps should she be taking after pitching in practice or a game? What drills or device can I use to help her throw with the correct motion?
Answer
Ken: I'm sorry, but I do not have any expertise in the area of softball pitchers.
I did a little research and would suggest a couple of things.
1. If you google in, softball pitcher shoulder injuries, there is a substantial amount of info to look through, both on mechanics and softball injuries,
2. This site, www.pitchsoftball.com, has a lot of information, and the ability to email or call him with questions. He has a section where you can read through questions that have been submitted previously, and his responses.
I read through his site and it has a good feel to it. You may get the same feeling. He is a softball pitching instructor in Colorado.
Sorry I can't be of more help. Other than playing softball after getting out of school, I have no expertise on the pitching end of the game.
Yours in baseball,
Rick
