Mutli-sport high school athletes
Question
What is your opinion on high school kids playing more than one sport during their high school years if they plan on playing baseball in at the college level. Should they forego playing other sport such as football or basketball and concentrate on just baseball year round?
Answer
Tim,
When I was in high school I played football, basketball and then baseball. I went on to play college baseball and was given a chance to play professionally after college. I say this because playing three sports does not hurt your chances of playing in college. Even more so, many athletes play multiple college sports. When I played baseball in college, about half of our team had played other sports while in high school.
I wouldn't give up on your other sports. Play what is fun for you so you do not look back in the future and regret not playing. College will be where you focus 100% on baseball. Now, if baseball is your best sport and your goal for college, you can always get your off season work in during the other seasons. You can always play winter or fall baseball during your other sport seasons. It can also be a great idea to give your arm some rest, while the other sports help keep you strong and conditioned. They can also show any college or pro scout that you athletic.
