Runner out at 3rd base
Question
Hello Andrew,
At my team's last game, there was a situation on which there was a runner at 3rd base, the batter swung the ball in play, fair ball, the runner went home, at the moment he touched home plate, the umpire called him out, saying he was into the field (his foot was on the line) when leading off the base, at the moment the ball was put in play. That was a right call? the runner must be off the field when leading from 3rd base?
Thank you very much,
Diego
Answer
Diego,
In most baseball rules, this is an incorrect call as you describe it. If the runner at 3rd base was hit by the ball, there are rules to determine the action, and the umpire would have been correct.
However, there may be local rules that address this situation, even though I highly doubt it.
