Hitting a Baseball
Question
Probably shouldn't get too hung up on it, but how come several coaches and websites and instructors say the top hand is the power hand and a few say it is the bottom hand? Curious your thoughts.
Thanks.
Answer
Kevin,
When I instruct a player I always use the bottom hand as power and the top hand as a guide or control. However in saying that I don't put that much emphasis on it and never really looked into why there is a difference in what coaches have to say. Some players need to use more top hand and some a little more bottom hand. The bottom hand needs to stay inside and extend quick while the top hand needs to keep the bottom hand from looping under the ball. Hitting is all about the rotation and staying inside the baseball, letting the hips do the work and letting the hips guide your hands into the swing. Good question.
Let me know if I can help you any further,
