Machine Pitch - Stealing
Question
Dennis - Our Board of Directors is reconsidering the stealing rule in our Machine Pitch Little League Division. Stealing one base at a time (except home) was allowed in season's past, however, they have disallowed it this season. I argued against stealing in that it robs the infielders of force out opportunities, decreases the number of at bats during a game because the 5 run rule is reached sooner each inning, teaches the catcher to throw rainbows to second (to get the ball over the machine) instead of on a line, and most importanly - they can't throw anyone out anyway! When stealing was allowed, a runner who reached 1st on a single would be standing on third 2 pitches later in every instance. The games were sloppy and the only outs made were to first base. Proponents of stealing are arguing that the catcher's need to be developed. What is your opinion?
Answer
Hey Scott,
My opinion is exactly as yours.
If you allow stealing at this age, a walk becomes a triple in 90% of the cases. and Yes, no one gets thrown out anyway..
To the fellows that say, that catchers need to be developed, well the hitters and pitchers need to develop too. There is plenty of time for the catchers to develop, when there is some chance of success at throwing out some runners.
You don't mention the age, but I am assuming the kids are 8 or 9 years old.
The only time that the kids should be allowed to advance, is when the ball gets away from the catcher. (not even when the catcher throws the ball back to the pitcher) Concentration should be about baseball, not about stealing.
Take it out until the kids can throw a bit better (11 or 12 years old) And no drop third strike till 12 years old, either.
Good Luck, and let me know what was decided.
