pinch runner
Question
Hi Sean! I am the mother of a 15 year old boy who is playing high school baseball. The last game, he was substituted in to run for the catcher after the catcher got a hit. My son, the pinch runner, ran the bases and made a run. The next inning he was substituted in to run again for the same boy after that boy received a walk. He crossed the plate again. In the books amd in the paper, the catcher was credited 2 on bases and 2 runs scored. Shouldn't the pinch runner have been credited with the runs scored? Also, if my son is again used to pinch run, does this make a difference on whether he could enter the game as both a fielder and batter? Thanks for your time.
Answer
Debi,
This can be a confusing topic. The one thing I will state first is that every league has a different rule on substitutions and re-entry.
It depends on the situation. Many leagues have a speed up rule where you can pinch run for your catcher with two outs. The reason is simply to prevent the slowing of the game while the catcher puts all his gear on. In this situation, they credit the run scored to the original batter since the pinch runner is not actually entering the game as a replacement. If he had pinch ran and then taken the catchers spot in the field, he would have been credited with the run scored and anything he did from there on.
Each league may have a different rule. Some allow any bench player to pinch run for the catcher, and some make it the last batter to record an out. I don't know many high school leagues which allow unlimited substitutions regarding one player so in your case it must have been a speed up rule.
Thanks for the question and if you have any others, or more info on this question to set the situation feel free to ask again.
