Wood Bats
Question
Hi,
I'm playing in a wood bat league for the first time. I'm interested in learning about the different models. Most commonly I see 110, 271, 243...I'm interested in a thinner handle, especially at the knob, although I do realize this may cause me to break them more often. Also, can you give me your thoughts on using a maple composite or bamboo bat, rather than pure wood.
Thanks
Kevin
Answer
Kevin,
The 110, 271, and 243 models are the most popular and most widely used. These model numbers were made by Louisville Slugger and are now used by many bat manufacturers. Some manufacturers use their own model numbers with the same dimensions of the traditional 110, 271, or 243. If you want a bat with a thin handle and especially at the know you will most likely want the 243. The 110 has a thicker handle than you would like. The 271 has a thin handle but with a slight flare to the knob. The 243 has the thinnest handle and the biggest barrel. If you like the 243 and the 271 then a great bat for you would be the I13. The I13 (Louisville slugger) has a 243 barrel and a 271 handle.
With composite bats or bamboo bats you need to check with your league. Some leagues do not allow composite or bamboo bats. Although these bats are great for practice and training because they have the same balance and feel as the wood bats.
If you like a certain bat company and they don't use the typical 110, 271, 243 model numbers let me know and I will give you a list of compatible bats.
Thank You,
John Priest
