is he realy as good as they say?
Question
my son is 12, he will turn 13 in july. right now he is pitching on an average of 67 mph. he has great control with the ball. his batting average this year was 775. He actually hit a home run last night about 260 ft. he has been hitting homers since he was 9. He can play any position great without any problem. everyone tells him he has what it takes but does he really. I just dont want to see his hopes crushed. I just dont know that much about this stuff. Help...
Answer
hi heather
thanks for the question!
sounds like your son has some skill. at this point in his development, he seems to be above the rest? however, no one knows what happens next? will he continue to grow? is he standing out because he has already grown and the other 12 year olds have not? will his interest continue to grow in baseball? does he have the drive to want to get better even when he is the best?
these are all questions that none of us know the answer to. i can tell you that there have been many young players who have been way ahead and not made it. there have been many who have.
there are also young players now who do not stand out, but one day will make it.
so what does it all mean? don't worry about what will happen. let him play, have fun, and enjoy the game. if he happens to make it great, but if not, no big deal. he will have had one heck of a journey. you and your son should enjoy the moment for what it is and let the other stuff fall into place. don't get caught up in the future, enjoy the now.
one thing i would like to add, is make sure if he is interested, you put him in touch with some "good" teachers who can teach him the game and give him the knowledge to play the game at the next level. many kids who are really good, miss out on actually learning things like delay steals, walking leads, how to throw bullpens, proper footwork and so on.
anyway, enjoy the present and encourage your son to have fun playing now.
hope this helps. if you need to reach me 314 531-0330 ext 133.
