Bases loaded walk

Question
Andrew,

I have asked you a couple of questions in the past and you have always done a great job.  In regards to a bases loaded walk, is the runner on third (or any base for that manner) automatically awarded the next base or must the batter-runner touch first before the other runners are free to advance.  I saw an instance where the runner on third was tagged out by the catcher before the batter-runner actually reached first.  There was some argument before they allowed the run to score, but it did get me thinking.

Answer
A base on balls is an automatic award for runners on base.  That being said, the batter runner must reach %26 touch first base in order for him to be awarded.  It does not make any difference in what order that all runners advance or at what intervals....They all advance no matter what.

Walks are generally considered "dead balls" however, if something funky occurred that could keep advancing e.g. a batter runner makes second on a wild pitch w/ ball four.

I had that happen in a college game about three years ago.  12th inning, game is tied.  Ball four, wild pitch to the backstop, runner slides into second, ball is overthrown by catcher to outfield.  Runner gets up advances to third where the coach keeps him going %26 he is safe sliding at home after a late throw from center field.  One of the weirdest plays I have ever personally had.  Score the run, go home!!! I think the scorekeeper is still working on that one...lol

Thanks again for your question.....

Andy
