asa rules ground rule triple?
Question
In a tournament this weekend the umpire allowed a runner third base on a ball
that went under the fence because he said the runner was pass second when the
ball went under the fence is this a correct ruling?
Answer
hi jacob
thanks for the question!
i can not answer with an asa official ruling.
however, i can say that anytime the ball goes under the fence on a batter ball, and the outfielder has not intentionally done anything to the ball, 2 bases would be awarded to batter and runners from the position at the time of pitch.
on a thrown ball all players would be awarded 2 bases from their location when the ball left the hand of the fielder. so if a runner was stealing 2nd base and a ball hit to the outfielder who fumbled the ball, and then threw the ball to 3rd base (after the runner had already touched 2nd base) and the ball were thrown out of play, the runner would be awarded home.
please let me know if you are ok with this, or if i have misunderstood the question.
thanks!
