Throwing
Question
My 15 yr. old son has developed a weird throwing motion, where he seems to throw almost off his front foot. I think he is somehow disconecting the flow of the throw,by somehow pushing back when the front foot touches. He has a strong arm,but has been slow to develop incorporating his wrist into a throw (thus no touch regarding release point). glove/bat suggest varsity (top Chicago area program). Any thoughts/suggestions for a cure would be appreciated.
Answer
hi john
thanks for the question!
there is no quick fix or cure for throwing. i would take your son to a coach/pitching or throwing who uses some video. take a video of your son and compare that to some of the more successful major league players and college players. have him see what the similarities are and the differences. have the coach explain the basic fundamentals of throwing properly and get your son to see/agree that if he wants to pursue baseball, he needs to be fundamentally sound in all aspects of the game. then the coach can lay out a series of drills (some dry and some actual throwing) where your son can learn to adjust his throwing.
this is not done in a week or 2, but can be done over time.
whatever you do, make it a fun thing to be with your son. as a parent, your parent goal is just to be with your son and enjoy the time being spent together. my kids are all older now and i realize the baseball stuff was not that important. using baseball as a way to spend time with my kids was the most important.
hope this helps.
