Need some help

Question
Hi Andrew - I had a very weird play in a game I played in today and I would like your help.  It was a slow pitch softball league.  R1 at first R2 at second no one out.  Ground ball to shortstop R2 does not move.  The shortstop tags R2 (still on second base) then steps on second while R1 is not yet at the base.  The call was double play but it was my understanding you can never be out while standing alone on a base when tagged, can you please let me know what traditional baseball/softball rules would say on this?  Thanks a ton.

Answer
I thought you were going to ask a hard one.....Very simple.

Ground ball, runners are "forced" to proceed forward.  Therefore R2 has to go to third, & R1 has to go to second.  Id does not matter if the runners are advancing or not, the behind runners have the right to the next base....So R2 is tagged out on or off the base, out 1.  R1 has toproceed tosecond, therefore the second force out. If the batter runner is tagged hinself or first base, then a triple play would have occured.

Great question.....Andy
