Sr. league bats in youth leagues?
Question
My son aged 7 just started playing coach pitch. He is on a team with all 7 year olds and has played and been beaten badly by teams composed of all 8 year olds(although he said it was his favorite game because so many balls wer hit to him). The 8 year olds are using senior league big barrel bats which the umpires say should be illegal but the commissioner tells them they are legal. Kids in the league are getting hurt when a big barrel is used because the ball is propelled unnaturally for that aged child. I'll let him use a sr. bat occasionally for practice and he'll hit it about 40% farther. I want him to learn fundamental hitting and refuse to let him use the large bats in the game. What gives? I think the senior bats are an ego boost for parents and most bats say on them not for youth leagues. How do I get the point across to the commissioner that the big barrel bats are bad for the kids short of litigation? Thank you
Answer
I totally agree w/ your thinking as was mine for years when I coached that age....I had three parents leave me for other teams because of my stance on staying w/ 2 1/4" bats.
Most leagues & coaches see the positives of a "larger bat surface" as more beneficial for that age group....I, as you do, disagree, but the fact remains that they are legal in Dizzy Dean, Little League, Dixie Youth & other leagues....It will take a serious injury or death to change their minds unfortunately.
Stay w/ your convictions, keep training your son...Play a game w/ him...Teach him to hit a ping pong ball w/ a broom stick....Tell him the values of making better eyesight & concentration. Then he will LOVE the standard sized bat & challenge him to "beat" the other guys w/ defense or other positive strategies...
Thanks for the question....Andy
