hit vs. error
Question
A ground ball was hit to ss he field the ball cleanly. The ss had to hurry his throw due to a fast runner. While throwing the ball to 1b the ball was over thrown. The play at first would have been close. The 2b close to the play said the throw if accurate would have been in time to call the runner out. The ball then went out of play due to the fact the ball bounce over the fence and the runner was awrded 2b. We had no official score keeper and this play would have been a no-hitter if scored an error. The other team called it a hit so they wouldn't have been no hit. can you offer some advice on this play on whether this is strictly judgemental call or other factors that need to be looked at. the ss said it was an error on his part.
Answer
Hi Dallas,
Scorekeeping rule 10(d) (1) An error shall be charged against any fielder whose wild throw permits a runner to reach a base safely, when in the scorer's judgment a good throw would have put out the runner.
So it's E6. (error shortstop)
