Batting 9 on a traveling ball team?
Question
Hello,
You recently posted a question to Jack Elliott in category Baseball Instruction:
I coach our city 12U "B" team with 11 players on it. I have 7 pretty good hitters (Batting .300+) and 4 players that struggle way too much (Batting .150 or less). My other coaches have suggested we limit our order to 9 batters this year to flip our line up over quicker and limit the # of automatic outs.
I am not opposed to trying this but I just don't know how to manage it effectively. When do the other 2 players enter the game, where would they play, what is a realistic # of at bats they can expect to see in a game?
I was hoping you had some insight or suggested reading material to help evaluate this further.
Thanks
Peter
Answer
Hey Peter,
My computer has been down.. I'm sorry for the delay.
Every player should play at least 2 innings in every game, in my opinion..
But seriously, 11 players is NOT too many players for ALL the kids to be batting in the line-up. I did this with 14 players and that was murder.. Ha!
Just have them play on the field for 2 to 3 innings at a min..
You';; see, it will work..
