Fielders Choice
Question
When scoring a fielders choice, the rule book indicates a fielder making "an attempt" on a baserunner on another base. Does "attempt" require a throw? Example. Runner on first, one out, ground ball to SS, SS comes up to throw to second and actually goes to a throwing motion and realizes second baseman will be late on covering. SS stops his throw and momentum and turns and throws to first just late, batter safe. If we assume the SS, without his "attempt" at second would have thrown out the batter/runner, should this be recorded as a fielders choice. If not a FC, it appears the only other option is a hit, which penalizes the pitcher and rewards the batter.
Thanks, JOhn
Answer
John,
In my opinion a feint throw does not constitute an attempt. Had the fielder threw to second base and the runner beat the throw it would be considered a FC. I'd also take into account that the fielder threw to first base. I would have ruled in your situation as an infield single.
I hope this has helped.
