Pitching delivery and stance
Question
what is the most effective way to deliver your pitch, stance on the mound etc;
Thanks.
Answer
Salvatore,
Your question is very broad in nature. There are as many styles of delivery as there are pitchers, it seems. However, I can offer the following as a basic starting point.
I like to have all "new" pitchers learn from the "stretch" position ( no wind-up ). I simply ask them to stand with both feet parallel to the mound. The body is to remain straight and balanced with the head facing the catcher and the eyes fixed on the catcher's mitt. The ball is in the throwing hand, which is in the glove and held at the center of the pitcher's chest.
I instruct the pitcher to focus on having all body movement ( except for reaching back with the ball) be either up and down or forward. I want no movement side to side and no leaning back. The key is to remain balanced so that the pitcher can deliver the ball straight toward the target. This is step number one. We can worry about velocity later.
The lead leg ( left leg fro a right-handed pitcher ) is lifted straight up with the knee reaching at least the waist. Then it is brought back down until about 6 inches off the ground, the toes are pointed to the target and the left leg steps toward the target. At the sam time that the leg is being brought down, the right arm reaches straight back with the ball as if you are showing the ball to the center fielder. The glove hand tucks in with the elbow of the glove hand pointing toward the target.
When the foot touches down, the right arm brings the ball over the right shoulder and releases the ball towards the target. The body then follows the ball forward.
Try it and see how it works for you. I'll be glad to answer your follow-up questions.
Good luck.
