proper coverage of second base

Question
I was surprised to hear a coach of my son's little league team (majors level 10-12 yrs old) instructing them that proper coverage of second base on a comeback ball to the pitcher depends on whether the batter is right or left handed (i.e., the second baseman covers when the batter is right handed and the short stop covers when the batter is left handed).  I have played second base at a variety of competitive levels and now play slow pitch softball, and I have never been on a team where I was instructed to do anything other than back up second on a ball hit back to pitcher.  It also seems to me that adding technical rules like this is more likely to cause confusion than it is to add any benefit. Your thoughts would be appreciated.

Answer
I will assume that the play you speak of is with a runner on first and less than two outs.

In this case, I do not feel that the batters dominant hand has anything to do with the play unless there is a very drastic shift for the defense to one side of the infield. This is very rare--especially in youth ball.

With a runner on first and less than two outs, the SS takes the throw from the pitcher and then completes the DP.
Remember to have the SS and P communicate this to ensure that everyone is on the same page.

With runners on first and second, the batter may show bunt.  Depending on how you like to defend the bunt in this situation, the SS may be responsible for covering third, in which case the 2B will need to cover the bag at second.

I am with you on this one.

Best of luck.

Pete
