14 & under baseball
Question
My twin son have joined a 14 & under league this year. This is their first time participatin i any organized sports. The them consists of 13 boys, 8 who have never played any baseball before. What can we parents do to help the coach get them into shape? Thay have played 3 games witch they have lost 7-18, 6-17, 0-22. All are becoming discouraged. We don't expect them to win, but we want there to be a chance that they might. HELP!
Answer
Charles,
It is not clear from your question what type of league the boys are playing in. I will not be able to answer with much more than some simple suggestions.
Now, on helping the coach. I'd suggest this only if he/she has asked for assistance. Then, I'd limit input to that which has been requested. The coach need room to develop thye team ( often, the coach him/herself needs to learn a few things on their own the hard way ).
You also might try to set goals for the team that do not have to do with a win or loss. Perhaps setting a goal of "less than 4 fielding errors" or "zero wild throws" will enable the boys to grab onto some successes along the way.
Finally, time will heal many wounds. You'll see by the time they have played 12 or so games, that they begin to learn from their mistakes and they also begin to learn from the proper play of the other teams. They will start to work better together and, when they do win that first one--it will be as sweet as any they will ever have. I know, I once had a team that lost 13 in a row before notching that first win--you'd have thought we won the world series!
Hope this helps
