LEANING
Question
Hello,
Why is it that most (I know not all..) ML pitchers lean down when gettting signs? Randy Johnson does almost a 90 degree lean, and most pitchers lean somewhat. I don't get it, is it to see the signs better? I cannot imagine that an extra 2-3 feet can help vision that much.

Answer
Tim,
I think it has to do with the angle they are viewing the catcher from up on the mound. The catcher has to keep their fingers hidden from the opposing bench which means their hands are tucked up between their legs. Pitchers lean forward to get at a better angle to view the partially hidden fingers. It is also personal habit. Randy Johnson is quite tall, and he probably developed the habit of bending down more then the average pitcher.
One other thing - sometimes catchers even put white tape on their fingers to provide a better visual for their pitcher. Check it out the next time you see a game on TV!
Hope this helps!
