major league pitching rules

Question
Can a pitcher jump or lunge towards home, land on his left foot (right handed pitcher)then hop and release the ball to home at the same time? I thought the pitcher can only take one step towards the batter and then release the ball while his free foot (or left foot) is in contact with the ground.  Is this correct?

Answer
Jim,

As long as the motion doesn't include a stop (and as long as the back foot remains in contact with the rubber until the pitcher releases the ball) I believe the delivery would be legal.  Unorthodox, but legal.

If he breaks contact with the rubber before pitching, or if he stops somehow then hops, it probably is illegal.

Hope this helps!

Brian
