Baseball Strategy: Sacrifices and steals
Question
Two part question:
1) In what strategical situations should a player "sacrifice"?
2) In what strategical situations is it best for a player to steal a base? What percentage of steals are "1st to 2nd" and what percentage of all steals are "2nd to 3rd"?
Thanks for your time and help!
Answer
Hi Reggie,
There are several instances where a sacrifice is good strategy. I will have my players sacrifice to stake an early lead or play catch-up ball when behind by a run or two. Basically, I'll give up an out to get a run whenever the game is close. Of course, I am less likely to ask my 3,4,5 and 6 hitters to lay down a bunt--but will do so if the opposing pitcher is shutting us down.
Best of luck,
Pete
