Question
I noticed that a person asked about the 3rd strike rule with bases loaded. You replied that a defensive player (normally catcher) can just step on home or throw the hitter out at first. I've always thought the 3rd strike rule only takes effect with a runnerless first base. Am I wrong? Also, if a hitter does strike out on a pass ball, is it scored as a pass ball or wild pitch/ or a stolen base. I know it's pass ball or wild pitch, but I need an expert to validate me in order to win an argument with a friend. Anyways, thanks.
Answer
Thomas,
The 3rd strike rule applies in all conditions when there are two outs, even if there is a runner on 1st base.
If a hitter strikes out on a passed ball or wild pitch, but then gets on base, it is recorded as an error on the catcher. If runners advance, they don't get credit for a SB, unless they started their steal before the ball becomes a passed ball.
Hope this helps!
