bat size?
Question
I just signed my son (age 6) for baseball. How do i determan what size bat he should use?
Answer
John,
Thanks for the question and congratulations! This is some of the most fun you will ever have watching and teaching your son the game of baseball. Just make sure you remember to keep it fun. The funner it is, the more he will love it and the more he will want to improve.
Bat size is very important. It is my opinion, and I have seen the best results using the lightest bat possible. At that age, you will want a length of about 27 inches. This should put him in the 17 ounce range. The thinner the wall of the bat, the lighter it will be. The lighter weight allows your son to swing faster, thus creating more power in his swing.
My 13 year old is 5'3" and weighs 135. He is a strong kid but I have him swinging a 31 inch, 22.5 ounce bat. He can swing it fast and get some even more power. Many of the pros swing a lighter bat now because it is bat speed that brings extra power.
Check out the net or your local sporting goods store and get that 26-27 inch bat that is as light as possible.
Have fun and enjoy!!
