running
Question
how do i get my team to run faster
Answer
Richard,
Thanks for the question.
Unfortunately, just as the old adage says, "You can't teach speed."
This is true in a way, however, in some ways it is not. Technique is huge when it comes to running. Simply teaching the kids the proper way to pump the arms and keep the upper body still can increase speed. We have several of your kids on our 13U select team that go to speed classes. They learn the proper way to break and take off and the proper running mechanics. Your kids may be a bit young for that yet and it does cost money. I am not a running coach, but I do know that there are several books that you can check out that may help you.
In baseball, I feel that instinct and smarts are just as important as speed when it comes to running bases. My son is not considered fast. But he is always at the top of our stats in stolen bases, because he knows when to break and gets a good jump. Some of these things are just instinct but we do drills in which the coaches shout when to "GO". After doing it enough times, the kids get the feel for it and anticipate and make better breaks and judgements.
Kids at your age level now are going to vary somewhat in size and ability. You will have to figure out who is fast and you can send and who to hold. We have to do the same at our level.
Check out the web for running mechanics and technique and you will find some interesting information.
